“Gods, Locke, you’re playing right into his game!” Bexley grumbled as he stood at the ship’s wheel, guiding it toward the stretch of mountain she’d indicated earlier. The entire crew had gathered in the control room for the ride, and while Alyssa and Bexley hovered by Locke, Ember and Sloan pressed to the outer arc of windows, eager to see the spectacle of a dragon’s lair from the air.

“I’m not the one who was sucking on a sausage,” Locke replied. “Why do I get the feeling you’re egging him on?”

“Sausage suckage is part of how I’m messing with their game. I’m trying to play outside the normal rules!”

“Okay, explain.”

“Nobles are subtle. They’ve never straightforward. They do everything in innuendos and double meanings and passive-aggressive politeness, and this gentlemanly act you’re putting on is exactly what they want!”

“It’s not an act,” Locke objected. “I am a gentleman, and besides, even if Nigel is a bit of a prick, he’s also associated with our client. It would be disrespectful to say what’s on my mind.”

For some reason the statement stirred another burst of girlish titters from Ember and Sloan’s direction.

“What?” Locke asked. “Something funny?”

“Oh, not funny. Exciting,” Sloan replied, face flush.

“It’s just that this whole situation is super hot,” Ember replied. “There’s no greater turn on than dudes being aggressively polite at each other for the heart of a woman. Why do you think polite romance is the most popular book genre?”

“It is?” Locke asked.

“Of course!” Ember replied. “In everyday life, if we want some sex, we just go out and get some sex—but in stories, it’s the anticipation that’s appealing!”

“The unspoken affection!” Sloan echoed.

“The emotion hidden behind the words!” Ember added.

“The fade-to-black climaxes!” Sloan squealed as if she’d just had a very non fade-to-black climax.

“Wait.” Locke took a moment to consider this information more carefully. “You’re telling me the most popular romantic genre in all of Haven doesn’t even have sex scenes in it?”

“Yeah,” both Ember and Sloan beamed. He glanced between Alyssa and Bexley to gauge their reactions, but Bexley just shrugged (perhaps predictably) as if she didn’t see the appeal of imaginary suggested sex, and Alyssa nodded toward the little shelf of books secured at the back, and nodded, “That’s why I prefer the airship adventures. They’re nastier.”

Which was a very interesting thing to learn about Alyssa, Locke reflected—but couldn’t allow himself to reflect long, for he knew exactly where that would end up. Or rather, what part of his body would end … up.

“We’re nearing the mountain.” Bexley pointed to a distinct protrusion in the low mountain range ahead. It was balder of trees than the rest of the mountain and symmetrical enough to look like it had been shaped out of the rock and soil. “If you go a bit to the left, you’ll see a—” Bexley continued, then sighed. “Or you could just follow Nigel.”

Locke echoed Bexley’s sigh, but allowed himself a laugh, too. He’d hoped to keep the Blue Heron out in front for the
